Odd this day

So, happy 87th anniversary to this anecdote from Malcolm Muggeridge’s dad about Stanley Baldwin and George V, which I’ve googled and can find no corroboration of, but it sounds wonderful.

On Saturday I drove to Croydon. Dad was out. When he came back, he looked unhappy and restless, and began to shout, as he does when unhappy, about how he hated the Monarchy, but there had to be humbug. I could see his conscience was troubled. He told me, on one occasion Baldwin went to see the King, found him quite drunk, picked up a glass to throw, and greeted him with: ‘Well, you fornicating old son of a bitch, what do you want now?’ I said my only regret was that he didn’t throw the glass.

From this rather fun book:

Front cover: The Faber Book of Diaries, ed. Simon Brett, featuring a pen, and portraits of diarists incl. Queen Victoria
