Two small anniversaries today: firstly, the 78th anniversary of Christopher Tolkien’s 21st birthday, which produced this very fine invitation to the ‘do’ from his parents:

Invitation card: 20 Northmoor Road, Oxford. Professor and Mrs. Tolkien request the pleasure of your company on Wednesday, November 21st, 1945, to assist them in celebrating the Coming of Age of their Son Sub-Lieut. C. J. R. TOLKIEN, R.N.V.R. 6.30 p.m. onwards. R.S.V.P. if not coming. Carriages at midnight. Ambulances at 2 a.m. Wheelbarrows at 5 a.m. Hearses at daybreak.

(With thanks to this source.)

It’s also the 81st anniversary of this diary entry from James Lees-Milne

Saturday, 21st November I have got through a lot of difficult work this week and should be feeling pleased with myself. Instead I have such a consuming sense of guilt, about nothing particular that I can recall, accompanied by an uneasy queasiness in the stomach, that I can only attribute it to mental instability.

(I have this feeling regularly, and not because I get through a lot of difficult work, but because I spend so much of my time when I should be working posting this nonsense instead. Ah, well…)
