So, er… happy 8th anniversary of the publication of this book which actually exists in the world.

Front cover of a book entitled The Adjustable Spanner — history, origins and development to 1970, Ron Geesin. The cover shows the words surrounded by images of the heads f various spanners, all adjustable, presumably

It’s still in print, and you can try before you buy with the google preview which features this magnificent spanner logo

A logo on an adjustable spanner: the head of a dog, plus the words KING DICK. The caption reads: Abingdon King Dick’s earliest logo, 1881

It is startlingly, gloriously, obsessively detailed — a testament to the eccentricity of hobbyists and their deep love of their subject.

An image of an adjustable spanner from the book. The caption reads: “Knurled-headed screw. We will call a screw with a milled, or knurled, head a ‘knurled-headed screw’.”

One of the oddest and best things about it is that the author is also a musician who worked with Pink Floyd. One of his other books is about the making of their fifth album.

Book cover showing the image of a cow looking at camera from Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother, made to look as though the photo’s on fire (a bit like Floyd’s Wish You Were Here cover). The book is titled The Flaming Cow, The Making of Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother, by Ron Geesin. Foreword by Nick Mason

The same year, he and Roger Waters also collaborated on the soundtrack to a documentary which features this unforgettable opening track:

It’s a deeply weird record, as a glance at the song titles will tell you.

Original Harvest record label featuring small cutout headshots of Waters and Geesin, plus track listing: 1. Our Song (Geesin/Waters) — 1:24, 2. Sea Shell and Stone (Waters) — 2:17, 3. Red Stuff Writhe — 1:11, 4. A Gentle Breeze Blew Through Life — 1:19, 5. Lick Your Partners — 0:35, 6. Bridge Passage for Three Plastic Teeth — 0:35, 7. Chain of Life (Waters) — 3:59, 8. The Womb Bit (Geesin/Waters) — 2:06, … 11. More Than Seven Dwarfs in Penis-Land

A mate of mine at school (now a GP) actually bought it when we were in the depths of our teenage Floyd obsession, and that opening track is probably the most entertaining.

But don’t take my word for it. The whole thing is on YouTube. Obviously. So, feel free to listen to Lick Your Partners and More Than Seven Dwarfs in Penis-Land and make up your own mind.

You can also see the opening section of the Vanessa Redgrave/Frank Finlay-narrated (and clearly quite odd) film:

But perhaps the greatest fact of all related to Geesin and his interest in old tools is that his first book about spanners was successful enough to warrant

Front cover of a book entitled The Adjustable Spanner Volume II, Ron Geesin, depicting a selection of adjustable spanners in a metal bucket

You can read more about Geesin on his website. (And you can find out more about Roger Waters on others, not least Twitter — but these days, I’m not sure I recommend it.)
