Clearly, nothing will ever top 23 October 1995, when the Financial Times killed one of Britain’s finest poets…

…but happy 81st anniversary to this entry from James Lees-Milne’s diary:

…and because that won’t fit in alt text, here it is again, just in case:

Patrick Kinross lunched. He was much more like his old self. He admitted that at first he found it difficult to reconcile himself to the un-war minded lives of his friends in London. They seemed unaware of and unconcerned with what was happening overseas. Furthermore, having accustomed himself to leading a picnic sort of life for so long he slightly disapproved of the conventional, pre-war way of living here. But he is already getting over these inhibitions. They are quite understandable. He still misses the mixture of seriousness and fun of his friends in the desert. He says that in spite of their deprivations they are happier than people here who have their comforts; and that in the 8th Army there is much wholesome buggery.

In an exciting 21st century update, however, apparently, this practice will soon be mandatory:

A fatuous tweet from 2022 from someone calling themselves Cows Cottage, @copperdale: “If Starmer gets in we’ll all have to take it up the arse…it’ll be the law”

Well, that’s certainly some draft legislation I look forward to reading.
